Tile Breaking

Sifu breaks 4 tiles with a palm strike

Sifu breaks 4 roof tiles with an internal palm strike. Notice that the tiles are only just touched to transfer the energy (Chi) through the tiles. The energy passes through the tiles; when the energy reaches the bottom tile it has nowhere else to go and the tiles start breaking from the bottom up. In external styles of martial arts the tiles break from the top down as the physical force of the body pushes the body part through the tiles (or other substance). This tends to break the tiles into many pieces. With our style tile breaks are clean in the sense that the tiles are almost sheared cleanly in half.

Knife Defence 1
Here the figure 4 position is used to defend against a downward knife strike.

Knife Defence 2
In this video the block on the opponent is picked up on the reverse swing. He then collapses the arm with the knife making his opponent cut himself. Afterwards the aggressor's arm is locked in behind his own back.

Single Grab 1
In this video the attacker is holding his opponent with this left hand and striking with the right. The arm is deflected across the opponent's body and pressed against the other arm leaving both the attacker's hands down. From there the defender attacks with a right elbow strike.

Different techniques
This clip shows 4 of the many possible combinations of blocks and counters that could be used. Here we have the attacker throwing a left high punch each time. The defender blocks with

  1. Deflective Palm block (outside), covers his opponent then follows through with a punch and another cover
  2. Upper Wristblock, right palm strike and then left palm strike
  3. Inside Palm block, left palm strike followed by a punch
  4. Forearm block, palm strike (back of palm) followed by a punch

Legsweep 1
A legsweep from a block off the leading hand. Notice that there are no wasted movements and everything is controlled. Although his opponent is a much larger person he is easily able to move him because of the body principles involved to place his opponent off balance whilst his leg is swept out.

Leg Sweep 2
Another legsweep but this time it is carried out from behind and not in front. Most of the aggressor's weight is on the front leg which is tapped forward just a little. This displaces the balance of his stance leaving the back leg to support all of the body weight (instead of the 40% in this stance) which is too much for the leg to support suddenly and so it collapses.

Chin Na 1
A simple wrist press from an opposite hand grab. It manipulates both the wrist and a pressure point on the hand which forces the aggressor to submit.

Chin Na 2
Small hand wrap from a opposite hand grab. This movement applies pressure on the wrist and opponents pinkie finger.

Arm Lock 1
Yet again another movement that can be applied to an opposite hand grab. This is more of a restraining technique rather than a subdue method.

Single Grab 2
Single hand grab and aggrssor is punching right hand. This movement works on the simple fact that an opponent can only punch if his/her shoulders are facing forwards. By pressing behind the elbow it locks the arm joint straight which then moves the shoulders, thereby leaving the punching hand an impossible distance to reach the target.

Double Grab 1
A double grab to the throat (choke). Again the agressors arm is locked straight which easily pushes them away.

Block on Frontkick 1
Partner is attacking back leg front kick. Leg is captured and hand presses on parnters shoulders to prevent any retaliation.

Block on FrontKick 2
A more comical way of capturing the leg for a block on a front kick. This technique is not part of the training curriculum.

Block on Roundhouse Kick 1
Aggressor is attacking with a right leg round house kick. Palm block to the knee and then backfist strike. Blocking on the knee requires less force to block as the most force is on the end where the foot is. Because of this the block and strike are carried out in punching distance, which is too close for the kick to be effective (and the kick is blocked anyhow). The aggressor is hit before they even get their balance back.
