Black Crane Kung Fu does not rely on strength for its techniques. Power is generated from one's stability and strength through one's stance. Through practice it is quite easy for someone to overcome a much larger or physically stronger person. This is achieved not by using opposing forces to defend an attack but rather re-direct an attack through deflection. For this reason size is irrelevant in defending oneself, making it not only suitable for men but for women and children who tend to be much smaller than their grown male counterparts.

Black Crane is a non tournament style. The main reason for this is the style is based on combat principles for warfare. The style Black Crane is heavily based on Hsing I Chuan (prounounced Shing Yee Chew-arn) and Pa Kua Chuan (pronounced Pa Kwaa Chew-arn). Hsing I makes use of many lightning fast direct attacks and Pa Kua uses many circular motions and deflections. Together these two styles create a symbiotic effect, each complimenting the other's differences.

As mentioned above, Black Crane not only teaches the fighting systems but also incorporates other elements such as breathing (Chi Gung) techniques and meditation. We also teach many weapons within the style such as baton, sword, spear, shortstaff, longstaff and walking cane, as well as flexible weapons such as nunchaku and chain. Black Crane also teaches defence against multiple opponents, defence against weapons and streetwise self defence making it an all rounded and complete style.
